The world of card games is huge. For this reason, the games have been broken up into five different badge programs.
“Card Games II” explores card games that can be played by kids or families with a specialty (non-standard) card deck.
Steps
1. Special.
This badge program focuses on card games for kids that have specialty or novelty cards. This doesn’t mean the back design of a standard 52-card deck. This means the faces of the cards are designed specifically for the game. The most popular card game of this type is Uno.
2. Stock.
Before you start determining the games you want to learn or teach, you need the card games. Since each game has its own cards, these can take up a lot more space and be more expensive. You want to take stock of what you have available. The best way to start is with what you already own.
If you don’t have any specialty card games, check with friends and family. They might have duplicates, were gifted a game they have no intention of playing or no longer play a game. Trying to get a set of cards from resale shops is an option, but don’t be surprised if you’re missing a card or two.
3. You.
What card games did you play as a kid with specialty cards? List those you have personally played as a kid or with your kids. In addition, look at the card games you have available and include those as well.
4. List.
See the supplement that lists some of the popular card games using specialty decks. You may notice that a few of these can also be played with a standard 52 card deck, so you can take that route if it works for you.
5. Rules.
The rules for the games normally come with the cards. If there are no rules, check online as many manufacturers make them available. Be sure you have the rules available before you want to start playing. Also, reading through the rules to get a feel for them or to refresh your memory can cut down on the time it takes to get started. This is important when playing with kids as watching you read is boring.
Specialty Cards
6. Flashcards.
Flashcards can cover any topic and allow kids to learn in a fun way. It might be the alphabet, animals or math equations. It might be questions they have to answer. Check out the flashcards you have available.
7. Memory.
Memory, or concentration, card games frequently come as specialty decks of cards. They are usually based on a theme such as television show or cartoon. Check out offerings online to see the different ways this type of card game is manufactured.
NOTE: This and many other specialty card games can also be played with a standard 52-card deck.
8. Trading.
Trading card games are designed for both kids and adults. The anime-based ones tend to be more targeted toward kids. Check out one of these. How might you introduce this type of game to kids? Remember the cost involved will affect the parents as well. How might you address this issue?
9. Apples.
Apples to Apples was the inspiration for Cards Against Humanity. This is a great game to try with kids as they need to think about their answers. Try this game or one of the same type.
10. Story.
Story cards allow the players to tell a story using their cards. They usually have images and words. These cards allow you to tell new stories because they bring in ideas. Look at the offerings on Amazon and other sites. Might this be something you want to try?
11. Others.
New card games are coming out all the time. You may even find some that are no longer being distributed during your exploration of your game area. Continue exploring specialty card games for kids.
