The world of card games is huge. For this reason, the games have been broken up into five different badge programs.
“Card Games III” explores card games that can be played by adults with a standard 52 card deck.
Steps
1. 52.
A standard 52-card deck can easily be found at grocery, convenience and other stores. Some companies brand them and give them away free. Before you start this badge program, make sure you have a deck or two to play the games you want to try. The best part of playing with a standard deck of cards . . . you don’t need a lot of storage for games.
2. Adult.
How would you define a card game for kids versus adults? Would it deal with the difficulty of play? Strategy needed to win? Complex rules? Multiple decks? While “Card Games I” focuses on simpler games that kids can play, you want to look for the more challenging games for this badge program.
NOTE: Depending on the maturity of your players, some kids may be able to handle more complex card games. You might also find that you can simplify a game to make it more playable as well.
3. You.
Start your exploration of card games with those you already have played. List those you’ve played. Track those which you might want to share or teach to others. Don’t remember all the rules? We’ll get there.
4. List.
Check out the starting list that is included with this badge program. Keep this list with your list. Note those you’d like to try or play to refresh your memory.
5. Types.
Ask yourself what types of games are better for kids to learn. Here’s a small list of different types for you to think about.
- Trick-taking
- Matching
- Shedding / discard
- Catch / collect
- Fishing
- Comparing
- Gambling
- Collectible
6. Rules.
You can find rules for many card games online. Be sure to check out more than one reference as there may be variety in the rules they present.
Remember rules are not set in stone. You can adjust them to match your own style. Be sure to note down any changes you make to the card games you play so you can revisit it again later.
7. Hoyle.
Have you ever wondered why there are so many different “Hoyle” books with game rules in them? It’s because there are many versions in the public domain. Instead of having you go searching for these, a few public domain books are included in the supplements. Some are specific for card games, some are general. Many are “Hoyle”-based. Check these out.
NOTE: Be aware that the way people wrote then may seem a bit odd. That’s probably why these are constantly being updated.
8. Changes.
Changes to the rules can take an old game and make it fresh. If you don’t document the changes, however, you’ll probably forget. Make notes of any changes you make during play so you have documentation for future sessions.
9. Digital.
You can play card games online or via apps. It’s a great way to learn. Explore digital offerings of card games using a standard deck of cards. Be sure to look for those that are more difficult.
10. Gameplay.
Looking to teach your favorite card game to others? Start by playing the game with all the cards showing. Explain what you would do with each hand. Not only will this benefit your players, you will give them more useful information as you see examples of different types of hands. It shouldn’t take more than a round or two for everyone to understand the basics.
NOTE: You will want to have the rules available in case there are questions during play.
11. Teach.
Once you’re comfortable playing a specific card game, offer to teach others. If a game plays with pairs, match up experienced players with newbies to make the transition from novice to knowledgeable player easier.
12. Group.
Starting a group of like-minded individuals allows you to play more often. You might focus on one card game or switch them out to learn everyone’s favorites. If you can’t find enough people to play with friends and family, you can also expand it to an announced group on Meetup, Eventbrite or Facebook. Find or start your own group to play and share those games you enjoy.
