“North Carolina Basics” reviews the “basics” of a specific state. Start with “North Carolina Explorer” for an overview of the state. This badge goes into more depth.
NOTE: Each state has its own printable set to start you on your journey.
Steps
1. Become.
How did North Carolina become a state? Why was it named this? Learn the history of the area before it became a state and why it did so.
2. Basics.
Find out the basics about North Carolina. This includes everything from being able to locate it on the map, to the capital city and larger cities, state flag, state bird, state flower, and state insect. Is there an official (or unofficial) song? What else can you find that you’d consider “basic” information? Note the information you find to share with others.
3. Discuss.
Ask friends and family about North Carolina. While this may not be completely factual, this will give you a view of how the state is perceived. What comes to mind when the state is mentioned? Make a list and see how much of what people think is true and how much isn’t.
4. Geography.
Find out about rivers, mountains, and other natural items that contribute to the beauty and uniqueness of North Carolina. How did these items affect the state? How have they changed since the area became a state?
5. Influence.
What states surround North Carolina and how do they influence it? Do specific industries or organizations affect the state as a whole? If so, what are they and how do they influence it? Do certain people influence the state? Are these influencers people you’d want to be known for?
6. Famous.
Find out who is famous today in the state of North Carolina. Often, people identify a state with the people who come from it. They might not have been born there. How do their actions reflect the state they are from? Is the impression you get from these people positive or negative? Why?
7. Change.
In exploring the history, how has North Carolina changed the area, the United States, or the world? From inventions to crops, each state has affected the history of the United States. Find one or more ways the state has changed into what we know of the state today.
8. Museums.
Explore online museums, local sites, and state sites as well as the national archives to learn more about North Carolina. You can also choose to go the physical route and check out these sites that way. Note those you visit and what information can be found there. Collect these to share with others.
9. Markers.
hmdb.org
Historical markers are one way to learn bits of history about a state. Check out an overview of the markers and read a few to see if you can find a fact that you didn’t know.
10. Stories.
Stories are a great way to share information. What stories are popular in your state? Are they true or made up? Visit your local library or search online for stories. Document these stories so you can refer to them later.
11. Local.
Local activities and events can be more impactful for your kids. They can visit the places the stories take place. Do you have historical sites with reenactments? Does a local group or organization offer tours? Often, stories make more sense when you can experience more than just the story itself. Explore possible interactive opportunities.
NOTE: We have a local garden and spent some time listening to the current owner tell us about how the garden received flowers from around the world when it was first built. Looking at the gardens was cool. Combining the gardens with the stories was much better!
12. Virtual.
Find places online where you can do virtual tours of various locations in North Carolina. Finding videos on sites like YouTube can also allow you to see parts of the state without actually visiting it. Keep a list of the links so you can go back to visit them again.
13. Tourist.
Find information at local or state tourist bureaus. If you could go on a trip to North Carolina, what would you like to see? Find out the locations and plan a trip.
14. Printables.
Learning about a state is a huge educational printable market opportunity. Look at printables others have made. Would you be able to use them with your kids to help reinforce the state knowledge you gained? Save those you’d like for inspiration to create your own.
NOTE: See the printable badge program that goes with this state for more to explore and share.
15. Present.
Collect information to present about North Carolina. This might be a PowerPoint presentation, physical boards with information, or even an activity box that others can use. Who might you share these items with?
